The pub takes its name from the fact that the now long defunct Chandlers Brewery was established on the site in the year 1814. Though, the origin of this historic building dates from much earlier.
The oldest part of the building dates back to the 14th century, and is timber framed. It was originally used as a gaol to house prisoners awaiting execution on the nearby gallows ( which still stand). The pub is home to at least 3 ghosts dating from this original incarnation.
